Hugh Shepherd Passes On Friday.

Funeral services were held here Sunday afternoon at the Schutte funeral home for Hugh Shepherd, 87, who passed away Friday morning at the Masonic sanitarium at Bettendorf where he had been living intermittently since 1940. The Rev. Eldon L. Seamans and the Masonic fraternity had charge of the services and interment was in Postville cemetery.

Mr. Shepherd was born July 25, 1859, in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, as the son of Dr. and Mrs. John L. shepherd. When he was nine years old the Shepherd family came to the United States and settled on a farm north of Postville (present Marten Olson's).

He was married to Amanda Jane Curry of Postville on October 1, 1879, and to them one son was born, Leonard, now living in Mason City. Also surviving him is one grandson, Lowell E. Shepherd, of Mason City. Mrs. Shepherd passed away in 1941.

Postville had been his home except for six years he spent in Nebraska and California until he went to Bettendorf. During his close to 80 years residence here Mr. Shepherd accumilated a broad knowledge of the history of this community and during the last ten years he was a frequent contributor of articles on historical data which were published in the Herald.

During his long residence here Mr. Shepherd followed a number of trades. For 20 years he was a harnessmaker; for 15 years he was a painter and paper hanger and as janitor in the old Postville school house for nine years and was for many years the caretaker of the Congregational church. His last work was as mail messenger, a position he held for 17 years with the U. S. government, carrying the mails between the post office and railroad depots.
