Sam A. Harris, 79, Prominent Farmer, Passes On Monday. Had Lived Here 60 Years; Hold Funeral Today.

Sam A. Harris, 79, a resident of this community for the past 60 years, passed away at his farm north of Postville Monday morning following a lingering illness of several years duration. Funeral services are being held this afternoon with the Rev. J. Ian Fraser and the Rev. William Suckow officiating, at the residence at two o'clock and the Community Presbyterian church at 2:30. Interment will be made in Postville cemetery.

Sampson A. Harris was born as the son of Rosanna and David McGary Harris on March 24, 1862, in a little log house on a farm near Caldwell, Ohio. When he was 19 years of age he came to Allamakee county, Iowa, and for four years worked for his uncle, Elisha Harris, on the Lybrand farm.

On September 21, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Smith and they established their home on a farm adjoining the Lybrand farm and this has been the home of Mr. Harris ever since. Mrs. Harris passed away in 1921.

Mr. and Mrs. Harris were the parents of two daughters, Lila, who passed away a number of years ago, and Leone of Iowa City. Besides his daughter, Mr. Harris is survived by three granddaughters, two brothers, Dal of Caldwell, ohio, and Elisha of Zanesville, Ohio; two sisters, Celia Radcliff of South Olive, Ohio, and Ollie Lukinbill of Zanesville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harris was always by occupation a farmer. Since the age of 14 he was actively interested in church work. Coming from a United Bretheran church in Ohio he joined the Bethel church of that denomination then located in the country northeast of Postville. At one time he was Sunday School superintendent and young people's leader in that church. Later Mr. Harris became a member of the Community Presbyterian church of Postville and at the time of his passing on was a member of the board of trustees of that church.
