Maria Magdalena Hangartner was born April 1, 1841 at Kanton Turgan, Switzerland. October 20, 1866 she was married to Franz Hangartner, and to this union nine children were born, three of whom preceded her in death.
She came to America in July, 1873, settling first at Middleton, Wis.; four years later they moved to Paoli, Wis., where they resided four years; from there they came to Postville and two months later moved to near Ludlow. Nine years later they moved to a farm on Henderson prairie and after a residence there of seventeen years returned to Postville, where they have resided since.
Following a brief illness, about 3:40 o'clock last Saturday afternoon she passed to the reward that awaits the pure in heart in the paradise of God.
She was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran congregation and a member of the Ladies Aid.
She leaves to mourn her loss an aged husband and the following children - Conrad, Jacob and Frank of Postville; William of Estherville; Mrs. W.H. Kiner of Chester, S.D.; and Mrs. Bertha Powers of Ossian. Also one brother, Melchor Keller of St. Paul; thirty-five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held from the Lutheran church at two o'clock on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. Schmidt. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
In this connection Mr. Hangartner wishes to express his heartfelt thanks to the many neighbors and friends for their kindly assistance and sympathy during the illness and burial of his beloved wife.
