Margaret LaVon Shindoll was born January 8, 1929 in Ludlow Township, rural Waukon, the daughter of Alfred and Nellie (Livingood) Winter. She graduated from Postville High School in Postville. February 18, 1948 she married Calvin J. Shindoll at Zion United Church of Christ Parsonage in Waukon. Margaret and Calvin farmed for many years in Jefferson Township rural Waukon.
She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday school and Confirmation teacher and was a youth group leader. Margaret’s artistic and creative talents were reflected in numerous ways, including her many quilting, crocheting and sewing projects. She had a gift of making all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren feel they were individually special in many ways while tying everyone together as a family.
She always loved her farm life and enjoyed her many successes at gardening, resulting in a pantry full of canned foods each year. Her ability to always have wonderful food on hand for anyone who walked through the door at any time was greatly admired as she made cooking look easy. Her efforts to keep the cookie jar full for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept her very busy indeed.
Survivors include her husband, Calvin, of Waukon; three daughters, Jan Ellingson of Waukon, Carol (Dick) Intlekofer Martin of Cheyenne, WY, and Mary Jo (Tom Waters) Nordheim of Waukon; six grandchildren, Tom (Melinda) Intlekofer of Canada, John (Bethany) Ellingson of Waukon, Casey (Emilee) Intlekofer of Cheyenne, WY, Donna Ellingson of Waukon, Nick (Emily) Nordheim of Williamsburg, and Shelby (Chris) Kamm of Dubuque; two step-grandchildren, Levi (Janelle) Martin of Cheyenne, WY and Riley Martin of Casper, WY; six great-grandchildren, McKenzie Intlekofer, Cassy Carson, Madalyn, Annelise and Tate Ellingson and Kinley Kamm; four step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Halverson, of Waukon; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Winter and Janice Winter, both of Waukon; and her beloved dog, Sadie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Nancy Lea; a son, James; four brothers, Gilbert, Calvin, Edwin and Cletus Winter; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Winter.
Honorary casketbearers are Donna Ellingson and Shelby Kamm. Casketbearers are Tom and Casey Intlekofer, John Ellingson, Nick Nordheim, Dick Martin and Chris Kamm.
