Bradshaw Whelock Rathbun was born in Allegheny county, New York, Feb. 10, 1836, and died in Postville, Iowa, March 2, 1910, aged 74 years and 20 days.
When but a small child he came with his parents to Rockford, Ill., where he grew to manhood, and from which place he came to Iowa in the year 1857, settling on a farm three miles west of Postville, where he continued to reside until five days before his departure. He came with his family to their present home, as though spared to see them safely settled in their new abode, and then to pass away in peace, his suffering o'er, his labors past.
He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Hall, of this city, Nov. 10, 1868. To this union were born seven children—four boys and three girls—one of which, a little girl, passed away in infancy, to be joined by her mother Aug. 2, 1892. Mr. Rathbun was again married to Mrs. Florence Miller, July 19, 1900, who together with his six children, six grandchildren, one sister, three step-children and a host of friends survive to mourn his loss.
Stricken about three years ago, together with his declining years, weaker and weaker he grew, yet always realizing his condition, patiently, and without complaint, he waited for the end.
A husband devoted to his wife and his home, a father with love and consideration for his children, a neighbor of honor and uprightness in word and deed, is the brief history of his life.
He sleeps. We lay him down to rest.
Funeral services were held from the home Friday of last week at ten o'clock a.m., conducted by Rev. J.S. Westfall, pastor of the M.E. church, after which the body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Castalia.
