Aaron Burr Cook
Aaron Burr Cook, son of Perry Everett and Stella Marguerite (Uhl) Cook, was born Aug. 16, 1908 in Post Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. He died Saturday morning, Dec. 4, 1993 in the Good Samaritan Center, Postville. He was 85.
He attended the Evergreen School near his home. During his early years, he worked for a packing plant and for the Post Office Department in Waterloo.
On Sept. 1, 1934 he married Helene Elizabeth Martindale at the home of the Rev. Van Nice in Waukon, Iowa. To this union, two daughters were born. They owned and operated Cook's Shell Station from 1940 until 1973. Burr also had the school bus contract for the Postville Community Schools for a number of years. In this way they became acquainted with most of the young people in the community. For the past 20 years, he owned and operated Cook's Family Car Wash on the west edge of town.
He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church and had served on the Board of Trustees. He had served two terms as mayor of Postville. He was also a member of Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204, serving as Past Master, and took part in the Northeast Iowa Clown Motor Unit and the Scottish Rite Lodge of Cedar Rapids; he was also a member of the I.O.O.F., and was a member of the Postville Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, serving as fire chief for several of those years. Burr especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He had many hobbies, among them fishing trips and photography. He was also an avid golfer.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helene, who died Sept 12, 1985 and a daughter, Karen, who died Nov. 13, 1991.
Surviving is a daughter, Kaye (Ronald) Olson of Wayzata, Minn.; a son-in-law, Garry Carman, of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren, Janet (Mark) Stephens of Dallas, Texas, Gregg Carman of Minnetonka, Minn., Chad Olson and Teresa Olson, both of Wayzata; a brother, Everett Cook of Postville; and a step-sister, Eloise Geiger of Waterloo.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1993 at the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, the Rev. Rueben Tjaden officiating. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Don Meyer, Charles Fishback, Donnie Martindale, George Huebner, Roger Harris, Alan Martindale, Peter Martindale, Ben Martindale, Noel Cook, Loren "Gus" Meyer, Robert Converse, Dean Downing and Ralph Hanson.
