Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Margaret Ann Vorseth Smith, age 95, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Waterville, Iowa died Friday, February 3, 2012 at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo. Memorial services will be held at a later date at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa.
Margaret Ann, daughter of William and Inez (Martelle) Frank, was born November 13, 1916 in Davenport, Iowa. Margaret married Clarence Vorseth of Waterville, Iowa. Clarence died in June of 1972. Later Margaret married Michael Smith who passed away in July of 1991. Margaret enjoyed her family, farming, interior decorating and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She loved playing basketball and in March of 1934 her Waterville Tigers basketball team was the first girls basketball team in Allamakee County to play in the state tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.
In addition to her two husbands, Clarence and Michael, Margaret Ann Smith was preceded in death by her parents, her son, William Vorseth; four brothers, William Frank, Jim Frank, Paul Frank, and Tony Frank; and three sisters, Mary Wilson, Priscilla Bagnek, and Anita Frank.
Margaret is survived by her children Duane (Sue) Vorseth of Gold Canyon, Arizona and Betty (Roger) Butz of Waterloo, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; and two sisters, Helen Bandel of California and Theresa Askelson of Spring Grove, Minnesota.
NOTE: The Waterville Tigers Basketball Team in 1934 was coached by Louis Ortale. In addition to Margaret, the other members of that team were Mavis Pladsen, Rita Spinner, Ruth Hanson, Vivian Hermanson, Joyce Warberg, Dorothy Erickson, Gertrude Gronna, Gladys Hagen, Jean Puls, Carroll Pladsen and Laurayne Ellefson. Waterville lost in the first round to Laurel with a score of 26-23.
