Catherine F. Monk
By the death of Mrs. Catherine Farley Monk, Lansing loses one of her oldest inhabitants. She was born in Kello, a suburb of Dublin, in the year 1817, and came to this country while still a young girl. She has made her home in Lansing since 1865 and during her residence here of over 35 years has endeared herself to all who had the good fortune to know her. Her cheerful patience under many trials and sorrows, and christian faith that whatever befel (sic) was the will of God, has made her an inspiration and help to those who knew and loved her, and her memory will be held dear by many to whom she has ministered during her long and useful life.
Of a family of nine children, only one daughter survives her, Miss Mary Monk, a teacher for 30 years in our city schools. A daughter-in-law, and four granddaughters, the wife and children of her son, John S. Monk of Chicago, are all that are left of her immediate family. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Feb. 12th, 1901. The funeral services were held at her late home on Diagonal street, Thursday p.m., Rev. Mr. Stinson of the M.E. church conducting the services.
