Robert Burns 1934-2003

A visitation for Robert Burns was held Thursday, May 15, 2003 from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P. M. at the
Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, followed by a time of remembrance at 8:00 P. M., led by the
Reverend James Allison. Inurnment took place at the Postville Cemetery on Friday, May 16, at 2:00
P. M. Robert Arthur Burns, the son of Marshall Arthur Burns and Myrtle Irene (nee Bray) Burns,
was born March 12, 1934, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, north of Castalia, Iowa. He died Tuesday,
May 13, 2003, at his home in Postville, Iowa. He had reached the age of 69 years, 2 months, and 1
day. During his youth, Bob and his parents lived in many areas of the United States including
Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana, and Washington. His father died while they were living at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and he and his mother moved to Frankville, Iowa. Here, Bob was employed as a farm hand. On June 17, 1956 Bob was married to Roberta Kneeskern at Castalia. To this union six children were born, Monty, Dennis, Kent, Craig, Jamey, and Jody. He worked at the Mink Ranch and farmed in the Castalia area for a short time and then was employed at the Postville Feed Mill and later worked for Hall Roberts' Son. Bob retired in 1994. On May 31, 1986 Bob was married to Barbara (nee Kohrs) Smock at Postville, Iowa. Barbara brought three sons to the family, Darrin,
Steve, and Brad. Bob enjoyed many interests in his retirement years, the first being his
grandchildren, as well as time spent with his wife, Barb and their special dog, Rambo. He loved
working in his yard and gardening, especially raising the variety of flowers that could be found in his back yard, along with several woodworking projects that can also be seen among the flowers. Bob was also adept at making quilts. He was often found at the sewing machine putting
together yet another quilt. He is preceded in death by his parents, and a stepson, Darrin Smock. Surviving are his wife, Barb, six children, Monty (Lori) Burns, Elkader, IA, Dennis (Diane) Burns, Ireton, IA, Kent (Linda) Burns, Postville, IA, Craig (Jaci) Burns, Postville, IA, Jody (Tim) Pennington, Lakeville, MN, Jamey (Bobbi) Burns, St. Lucas, IA; two step sons, Steve (Darcy) Smock, Postville, Brad (Gina) Smock, Prairie du Chien, WI; 19 grandchildren: Chris, Kyle, Kendra, Jason, Nathaniel, Megan, Robert, Zachary, Jerad (Lori), Jeramey, Jesi, Elizabeth, Brittany, Ashley, Tony, Racheal, Kelsie, Tyler, Shawna; 2 great grandchildren: Parker Elizabeth, and Khiaya. Also surviving are six brothers- and sisters-in-law: Lyle (Norma) Kneeskern, Castalia, Wes (Judy) Kohrs, Sugar Loaf, CA, Dennis (Shelva) Kohrs, Postville, Karen (Jack) Jaster, Ossian,IA, Gary (Cindy) Kohrs, Independence, IA, and Gloria (DeWayne) Janey, Shellsburg, IA, and two mothers-in-law, Hilma Miller and Mabel Kneeskern, both of Monona, IA.
