Mary Ann (Schulte) Tierney Gavin

The heavens opened and God called home one of His finest with the passing of Mary Ann (Schulte) Tierney Gavin, age 87, Friday, September 16, 2011. Funeral services were held Monday, September 19 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon with burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hanover Cemetery.

Mary was born to the late Henry T. and Mayme (Connor) Schulte October 2, 1923 in Dorchester. She was united in marriage to Thomas Tierney in 1939. Thomas died as a result of an automobile accident November 2, 1950. They were blessed with five Tierney children, Tess Pladsen and Muggs (Francis) Berns, both of Waukon, Pat (Cindy) Tierney and Kate (Jeff) Tooke of LaCrosse, WI, and Tom (Coni) Tierney of Waukon.

Mary later married and shared many happy years with her devoted husband, Joseph Gavin. This union was blessed with two children, Sue Bennett and Larry (Chris) Gavin of Waukon.

Mary’s life was dedicated to her family. She took great pride in keeping a comfortable home and was known to paint rooms, rearrange and upholster the furniture, all on a moment’s notice. Mary was an excellent seamstress and was able to design her own patterns, tailor clothes and sew wedding gowns. She crocheted and gifted many beautiful items, all while enjoying any homemaking challenge sent her way.

One of her greatest joys was cooking and she put her little kitchen to good use. She loved feeding her family and sending food out to friends in their time of need. Her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls could not be matched. Mary had many talents, including cutting and styling hair. As with all her endeavors, she had a knack for it and many were happy to call her their stylist.

Because she married young and had a family to raise, she was not able to complete her high school degree. When the children were ready to go out on their own, she earned her GED and also decided to work outside the home. For many years she was employed at St. Patrick’s grade school in Waukon doing what she loved, feeding children.

Mary was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was a devoted Catholic and held the religious community in high esteem. She had a special devotion to Blessed Mary, St. Jude and St. Anthony. Her Rosary beads were never far from her.

She is survived by her seven children, 26 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Francis (Rita) Schulte; her sisters-in-law, Kathleen Schulte and Jean (Joe) Dougherty; and a brother-in-law, Hubie Hermanson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Thomas and Joseph; a grandson, Jeff Berns; a great-granddaughter, Charlie Belle Elmer; a son-in-law, Arlyn Pladsen; a sister, Theresa Schulte; and her brothers, Clarence, Vincent, Joseph, Hank, Lawrence, Bernard and Mathew Schulte. They will welcome her with open arms.
