Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Cloy Weihe Schultz, Jr., age 72, were held Monday, March 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated with the Rev. Richard Simpson Hanson delivering the message. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were Cloy's 10 grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers were his nephews and nieces, Bradley Schultz, Larry Schultz, Wyatt Schultz, Daryl Schultz, Stuart Schultz, Craig Schultz, Jeff Schultz, Kent Schultz, Chris Schultz, Randy Schultz, Kimberly Deering, Shannon Schultz, Lynn Hangartner, Aaron Cook, Collin Cook, Corey Cook, Dorn Cook, Tami Lindquist, Tara Lindquist, Trystan Lindquist, David Janett, Kris Janett, Jim Janett, Lynn Sander, Marcee Sander, Danny Sander, and Trent Wright.
Cloy Weihe Schultz, Jr., son of Cloy F. and Viola (Weihe) Schultz, was born January 26, 1929 in Postville, Iowa. Cloy was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was baptized on May 19, 1929 by Pastor Fink and confirmed on July 19, 1942 by Pastor Ludwig. Cloy lived in Postville his entire life. He attended country schools in the area and completed his education from Postville High School in 1947. Cloy was well known for his athletic abilities and was actively involved in football, basketball, and baseball. He pursued further education at the University of Iowa on a scholarship. It took him one quarter to return to Postville, deciding to pursue farming as his career. Following high school, he served on the community baseball team and could be counted on to hit a few over the fence.
On December 26, 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Shirley Ann Brown. As a team, they began a successful farming career on the "old Schultz farm" south of Postville. He was honored to be named "Outstanding Young Farmer" and received many awards along the way. Cloy's farming career continued for 52 years, during which time he raised a son and three daughters.
Cloy supported the Postville High School Education and Athletic Department. He served as director of the Federal Land Bank, Postville Farmers Coop, Citizen State Bank, and the Postville Telephone Company and was a member of the Iowa Cattleman's Association. Cloy enjoyed his home and family. His most favorite places away from home would have been the Mississippi River, Effigy Mounds, and Pikes Peak.
Cloy Weihe Schultz Jr., died early Friday morning, March 16, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Carole Lindquist; a brother Grant Schultz, a nephew, David Schultz, and a great-nephew, Elijah Schultz.
Cloy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorraine; his children, Deborah Hager of Waukon, Iowa, Jacquelyn (Michael) Wilson of Rochester, Minnesota, Blaine (Sherry) Schultz of Postville, Iowa, and Annette (Drew) Deering of Postville, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Jason Hager, Joshua Hager, Marcus Mihm, Alexander Wilson, Kristina Wilson, Krista Nebendahl, Keyli Schultz, Katrina Schultz, Tasha Deering, and Koal Deering; 3 great-grandchildren, Brandi Nebendahl, Anna Nebendahl, and Jaymen Mihm; 2 brothers, John "Jack" (Patricia) Schultz of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Byron (Darlene) Schultz of Postville, Iowa, and a sister, Rochelle (Noel) Cook of Postville, Iowa, along with many nephews and nieces.
