Shirley J. Gravier, 64, of Waukon died Monday, June 27, 2011 at her residence in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, July 1 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Shirley Jean Gravier was born April 21, 1947 in South Kingstown, RI to Jim and Lillian (Johnson) Schiller. She grew up in North Kingstown, RI. In 1972 Shirley married Lionel Gravier in East Greenwich, RI, and they were happily married until his death in 1990.
Shirley worked for the State of Rhode Island for 35 years as a caregiver to the mentally ill, before retiring in 2000. In 2001, Shirley moved from Rhode Island to Iowa to be closer to her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her two grandsons very much. Shirley also enjoyed spending time with her dear friend, Maureen Keenan.
Survivors include one son, Timothy Smith of Waukon; one stepson, Denis Gravier of Coventry, RI; one stepdaughter, Susanne (Don) Nelson of Richmond, RI; two grandsons, Joshua and Kordell Smith, both of Waukon; two sisters, Judy (George) Battey of Florida and Kathy Hoarmeyer of Arkansas; two brothers, Jim (Rae) Schiller of Coventry, RI and David (Mary) Schiller of North Kingstown, RI; and one daughter-in-law, Carol Smith of Waukon. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Lillian; and her husband, Lionel.
Casketbearers were David Schiller, Denis Gravier, Joe Keenan, Cletus Rooney, William Becker and Carol Smith.The Waukon Standard, July 7, 2011
