Funeral services for Monica Cecelia Sweeney, age 68, of Waukon, Iowa were held Thursday, July 26 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Ed Lechtenburg conducting the services. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Hanson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were her six sons, Jan Sweeney, Joe Sweeney, Jerry Sweeney, Jim Sweeney, Jeff Sweeney, and Jake Sweeney.

A lifelong Allamakee County resident, Monica Cecelia, daughter of Michael "Mike" and Ellen (Byrnes) Burke, was born January 2, 1922. She was raised in the Hanover area of Allamakee County. She graduated with honors from the Waukon High School. She and Ray Sweeney were married September 21, 1943 at Hanover. For 33 years they lived in the Lycurgus area where she was active in the St. Mary's Lycurgus Church. They farmed and owned the Village Farm and Home Supply Store in Waukon, Iowa. She was a member of the St. Patrick's Church after they moved to Waukon, Iowa.

Monica Cecelia Sweeney died Monday, July 23, 1990 at her home in Waukon, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, three infant children, John Sweeney, Mary Sweeney, and Rose Sweeney, a brother James T. Burke and a sister, Sister Mary Jude (Helen) RSM.

Monica is survived by her husband, Ray Sweeney of Waukon, Iowa; 6 sons, Jan Sweeney, Joe Sweeney, Jerry Sweeney, Jim Sweeney, Jeff Sweeney, and Jake Sweeney, all of Waukon, Iowa; 5 daughters, Jane Johanningmeier and Julie Fisk, both of Monona, Iowa, Joan Manning of Mabel, Minnesota, Judy Lubahn of Winona, Minnesota, and Jean Ann Sweeney of Waukon, Iowa; 28 grandchildren; 2 brothers, John Burke and Michael Burke, both of Waukon, Iowa; and 5 sisters, Mary McCormick, Rita Liddiard, and Gertrude "Gert" Schulte, all of Waukon, Iowa, Margaret "Marge" Grohall of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Catherine Griffin of New Albin, Iowa.
