Anne Steffenson, 61, of Waukon died Friday, June 17, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, June 20 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Music was provided by the “Hanson” family. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Cemetery, rural Waukon.
Carolyn “Anne” Steffenson was born December 31, 1949 to Henry and Leone (Dougherty) Lippe at Hall’s Maternity hospital in Waukon. She was baptized January 8, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lycurgus and was confirmed there June 17, 1956.
Anne attended Hanson country school for eight years in rural Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1968. She went to work for Dr. Roy Wheat as a dental assistant upon graduation, and then went to work for Dr. Curtis Sander and Dr. Bruce Baxter, veterinarians, as a secretary/bookkeeper, a business which later became Allamakee Veterinary Clinic.
June 24, 1972, she married Lyle Steffenson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lycurgus. In February of 1973 they moved to the rectory at Lycurgus and were in charge of the church and church grounds. Anne also assisted as lector, eucharistic minister, song leader and taught catechism for a number of years. She and Rita Whalen introduced the first guitar mass at Lycurgus. She was a 4-H leader, and was parish council secretary for 15 years.
Lyle and Anne moved to Waukon in 1983 when Lyle’s health began to fail. Anne left the veterinary clinic after 14 years and went to work at Waukon Newspapers. She was a member of the Waukon Jaycettes, serving as president for one year. She retired from the newspaper office in 1989.
Anne was a long-standing member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president, 1st vice-president, 2nd vice-president, treasurer, membership chairman, and member-at-large. She was also county president twice and a member of the Past Presidents, where she served as treasurer. Anne was active in the Northeast Iowa MS Support Group and held various offices within the organization.
Survivors include her sister, Barb (Merle) Hershberger of Jesup; two brothers, Gary (Karen) Lippe of Okoboji and Ron (Juanita) Lippe of Cedar Rapids. Nieces and nephews surviving are Brian (Natalie) and Shelley Hershberger, Athena, Tim (Kati) and Tony Lippe and Lisa Zaraqoza, as well as grand-nephews and nieces Lilyan and Anikin Lippe, Maison Read, and Anthony and Phillip Lopez. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Steffenson, December 2, 1992; her parents, Henry and Leone (Dougherty) Lippe; and her in-laws, Melvin and LaVon (Monroe) Steffenson.
Casketbearers were Brian Hershberger, Tim Lippe, Tony Lippe, Scott Kreitzer, Doug Clark and Shawn Moe.The Waukon Standard, June 22, 2011
