Ruth A. Brink, 91, of Waukon died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, June 6 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial was at Zalmona Cemetery.
Ruth Alice Brink was born February 29, 1920 in Waukon to John and Sarah (Kruger) Ludeking. Ruth graduated from Waukon High School with a Normal Training degree in teaching and taught for a few years at Ludlow School #2. She was a lifelong member of Zalmona Presbyterian Church and active in its women’s organizations.
June 14, 1941 she married Leo G. Brink at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church parsonage, with Rev. Buschman as pastor. Ruth’s parents had a wedding supper for the newlyweds with a few friends and relatives in attendance. Later in the evening there was a shivaree for the couple at her parents’ farm.
Ruth and Leo operated a snack shop on Spring Avenue for about a half a year. In 1950 they moved to Ludlow, where they farmed and lived ever since. Ruth and Leo enjoyed many things together: fishing while spending time at their cabin by Harpers Ferry, deer hunting in South Dakota and Wyoming in the fall, visiting Deadwood, SD, spending a few weeks in Texas each winter for a number of years, and dancing to Leo Greco.
Ruth enjoyed gardening, baking, making jam, needlepoint, her strawberry patch, caring for her chickens, and always had a smile for everyone.
