Lulu Patterson

Lulu Johanna (Swenson) Patterson, 80 years old, passed away in Poway, CA, near San Diego, CA, May 17, 2011. Funeral Services were held May 21 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in San Diego. She is buried at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, CA, near San Diego.
Lulu was born in a farm home at Forest Mills, Postville, May 30, 1930 to Lloyd and Cora Swenson. Lloyd and Cora were long-time Waukon residents and Lloyd was the caretaker of Waukon City Park and the cemetery.
Lulu had three sisters, Ruth Schlitter of Oelwein, Marie Timmerman of Monona (deceased), and an infant sister, Jeniel Swenson (deceased). She also had two brothers, Art Swenson of Chatfield, MN and Hubert Swenson (deceased). She attended the little red school house in Postville and later attended Waukon High School and then Monona High School, which she graduated from in 1949.
For a short time Lulu worked at the S&D cafe in Waukon as a waitress. Lulu married Roy Patterson in 1951 and they had two children, Patricia, born in 1953, and Ronald, born in 1955. They moved to Louisville, KY in 1953 and then to San Diego, CA in 1961. Lulu became totally deaf after moving to California and was also a single parent. She quickly found a job as a data entry operator at Greenwood Mortuary and retired from the company after 32 years of service in 1993.
Lulu enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, needlework, reading, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, hummingbirds and cooking. She enjoyed social activities of a local deaf club called the Buttonears. She most enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lulu is survived by two children, Ron (Denise) Patterson of Bakersfield, CA and Patti (Art) Hyss of Poway, CA; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren: her sister, Ruth Schlitter of Oelwein; and her brother, Art Swenson of Chatfield, MN; as well as many nieces and nephews.
