Funeral services for former Postville, Iowa resident, LaVerne Arbie Rose, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa were held Saturday, May 10 at Decorah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Allen Vick and Rev. Bryan Robertdson officiating. Casket bearers were Joseph Dickens, John Moser, Wayne H. Schwinefus, Michel Dickens, Dean Ohloff, and Ron Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Moser, Hall Roberts, and Otto Ruen. Full military honors were provided by Helof Holm V.F.W. Post # 1977, Bernats-Symonds American Legion Post #163, D.A.V. Hanre-Giesen Chapter #8 and AMVETS Post #96. Interment was in the Decorah Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, Iowa.

LaVerne Arbie Rose, son of Irey W. and Mabel (Kirkestue) Rose, was born March 25, 1921 in Postville, Iowa. He was baptized by Rev. E. Schmidt on April 10, 1921 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. He was confirmed by Rev. Kvamme at the Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa on September 1, 1935. LaVerne attended Fayette County rural schools and graduated from West Union High School with the class of 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from September 1942 to January 1946. Part of the time was spent as an instructor in Army Tehcnical School and part of the time was served at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was a member of the American Legion since his discharge.

He was united in marriage to Betty E. Stolle of West Union, Iowa on June 6, 1948 at West Clermont Lutheran Church by Rev. A. O. Nesset. This union was blessed with two daughters. LaVerne worked for Big Gain Feed Products before and after his service. In 1947 he was appointed manager of Fayette Soy Bean Mill. From 1952 till he retired on December 31, 1986, he was employed by Hall Roberts Son, Postville, Iowa. He started as a salesman and was instrumental in developing the wholesale feed and farm supply business for the firm. The last twelve years he was the manager of Hall Roberts Son. While in Postville, LaVerne was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and as a Sunday School Teacher. He was active in community affairs, including serving as a member of the Postville Hospital Board and the Postville Commercial Club. After retirement, LaVerne and Betty moved to Decorah, Iowa where he was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church. Betty and LaVerne enjoyed bus trips during retirement. LaVerne was a skilled carpenter who made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his family.

LaVerne became a resident of the Barthell Order of the Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa on March 21, 2008. He passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Preceding him in death were his parents, and 3 brothers, Charles Rose, Bernard Rose, and Eugene Rose.

LaVerne is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Betty; 2 daughters, Sharon (James) Rendack of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Jayne (Dan Dickens) Rose of Bettendorf, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Joseph Richard, Michael LaVerne, and Abigail Qian Qian; 1 brother, Irey "Bud" (Ann) Rose of Waterloo, Iowa and his extended family and friends.
