Lorraine Adeline Sebastian, 86, of Postville died Sunday, May 22, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral Services were held Friday, May 27 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, with the Rev. Steve Brackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Postville Cemetery in Postville.
Lorraine was born September 28, 1924 in rural Decorah to Henry and Edna (Ramsey) Knutson. She was baptized in October 1924 and confirmed May 22, 1938 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. She attended rural country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1941.
Lorraine was united in marriage to Lyle Eldo Sebastian September 8, 1945 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. Two daughters were born to this union. Lorraine and Lyle farmed together from 1945 to 1980 on the family farm. From 1980 to 1999, they lived in the apartment in the back of their retail store, Lorraine’s Tots & Teens. They later moved to a home in Postville. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Lorraine worked at Montgomery Ward in Manitowoc, WI following her graduation from high school and while Lyle served in the armed forces during WWII. Following their marriage she was a homemaker and farm wife. She also worked in the office at Hygrade Meatpacking and at a local dress shop for a number of years. In 1974, at the age of 50, she purchased the local children’s clothing shop. For 25 years she enjoyed the children and their mothers that shopped at Lorraine’s Tots & Teens.
Lorraine was active in St. Paul’s WELCA and Circle holding various offices in both organizations. Following her retirement she found she had time to develop a “green thumb” in her backyard garden. She loved to read and until the last few months of her life tried to do a crossword puzzle every day. She loved visits from her family and enjoyed keeping up to date with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s various activities.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sharon (Larry) Snitker of Waukon and Kathryn (Douglas) Jewell of Highlands Ranch, CO; six grandchildren, Todd (Rhonda) Snitker, Christi (John) Regan, Corey Snitker, Ryan (Trista) Snitker, Wendy Jewell and Chad (Stephanie) Jewell; nine great-grandchildren, Stephanie (Heath) Kelley, Andrew (Alex) Snitker, Benji Snitker, Seth Snitker, Calvin Snitker, Georgia Jewell, Harriet Jewell, Jordan Snitker and Colton Snitker; and two great-great-grandchildren, Gracelynn Kelley and Renae Snitker.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle Sebastian, in November 11, 2007; and one sister, Evelyn (Raymond) Sersland.
