Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services were held for Verni William Brandt on November 11 at 2 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Center Chapel in Postville, Iowa with the Rev. Joseph Nesheim officiating. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery with Schutte Funeral Home making the arrangements. Casket bearers were Duane Brandt, Troy Brandt, Daryl Brandt, Rich Hanson, Francis Butikofer, Arthur Matt, and Rick Matt.
Verni William Brandt was born February 6, 1911 near Postville, Iowa to Ernest and Bertha (Kuhse) Brandt. He attended rural school near his Postville Junction home. On August 25, 1937 he married Mildred Hanson in West Union, Iowa. They lived in the Clermont, Iowa and Postville, Iowa areas. He sheared sheep, shingled homes and other farm buildings and did on the farm butchering. He was a member of West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa. In 1992, Verni became a resident of the Postville Good Samaritan Center where he died Saturday, November 8, 1997 at the age of 86.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mildred, who died June 12, 1997; three brothers, Otto Brandt, Gilbert Brandt, Raymond Brandt; 4 half-brothers Chris Fischer, Walter Fischer, William Fisher, and Fritz Fischer; and 2 half-sisters, Viola Katz and Elsie Meyer.
He is survived by a son, James (Jane) Brandt of Decorah, Iowa; 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence "Ernie" (Mary) Brandt of West Union, Iowa and a sister, Mary Topp of El Cajon, California.
