Clarence C. Hoth

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, for Clarence Carl Hoth, who died Wednesday, March 2 at the Community Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Norris C. Swenson officiated.

Born December 28, 1901 on a farm near Postville, he was the son of Charles and Sophia Klemme Hoth. He was baptized in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, March 30, 1902 and confirmed in the Zion Reformed Church, Waukon, in April 1916. He had been an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, since 1918.

Following graduation from Postville high school in 1921, he attended the Twin City Business University, St. Paul, Minnesota.

March 14, 1935 he was married to Esther Minnie Fogt in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, New Hampton.

He had a long business career having been employed by Interstate Power Company for two years, working in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 1925, he accepted the job as Allamakee Deputy County Treasurer and then was elected to three terms as County Treasurer which position he held until April 1936. He resigned this position to accept a position with the Citizens State Bank at Postville as assistant cashier.

In 1944, he purchased the Thoma Hardware Store and, in partnership with his brother, Elmer, operated it for the next 16 years. After selling the hardware store in 1960 he returned to the Citizens State Bank for the next four years before retiring.

He served as a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church council during the time the Church was being rebuilt; was director of the Citizens State Bank for several years; served on the Postville town council for six years, on the Big Four Fair board for several years and was involved in civic activities.

Preceding him in death were his wife, parents and one brother, Elmer.

Survivors include his two sons, Richard, Cedar Rapids and Donald of Wheeling, Illinois; two sisters, Florence of Postville and Mrs. William (Hazel) Behrens of Racine, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Laurie, Paula, Kevin and Darren; six nephews and nieces.

Interment was in the Postville cemetery.
