Howard Hagen

Howard Arthur Hagen, age 84, died peacefully Monday, March 28, 2011 at his home in Seattle, WA with his family at his side. Immediate memorial services were held Sunday, April 3 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA.
Howard was born November 17, 1926 in Waterville, the son of Glenn and Estelle (Bryson) Hagen. Howard graduated from Waterville High School in May 1944 and joined the Army Air Corps in 1945. February 21, 1960 he married Anita Meints in Rapid City, SD.
Howard was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served a distinguished career in the development and management of the U.S. military nuclear weapons program. His career of 31 years took him and Anita to many duty locations around the world, which they enjoyed immensely. He completed his Air Force career as Director of Munitions at Headquarters Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, CO, retiring in 1976.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Howard started a second career with The Boeing Company and moved to Seattle, WA, where he was involved in the nuclear certification of the B-52, the B-1, and the B-2 bombers. He retired from Boeing in 1994.
During his life, Howard was full of adventure and truly enjoyed travel and the joy of discovery. He cherished time with his family and his friends, whom he continued to make wherever he went. Howard will be remembered for his boundless optimism, ever-present smile, and his ability to see and appreciate the best in all of us.
While Howard traveled and worked around the world, his heart and soul remained grounded in Iowa - he always felt he was simply away on an extended trip and would return to Iowa, family, and friends whom he loved when the adventure was over. Howard requested to be buried in the family cemetery in Waterville next to his parents, Glenn and Estelle, and brothers, Charles and James. The family anticipates a service date sometime in July or August and will announce the time and date as soon as possible.
Howard is survived by Anita, his beloved wife of 51 years; their son, James, and his wife, Nancy, and their three children, Claire, James, Jr. and Lydia.
In lieu of flowers, Howard requested any donations be made to either his church in Seattle, The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, or The American Cancer Society.
