Calvin Henning

Calvin L. Henning, 84, of Waukon died Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Rev. Judy Scheer officiating. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 31 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Calvin Lloyd Henning was born October 18, 1926 in Ludlow Township rural Waukon, the son of Theodore and Emma (Grotegut) Henning. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon. Calvin attended rural Waukon country schools, Frankville High School for two years, and graduated from Postville High School in 1944.
April 25, 1948 he married June Elaine Hanke at Salem United Church of Christ. They farmed together in Ludlow Township for several years. Calvin also hauled cream and did some carpentry work. He and June moved to Waukon in 1980, where they cleaned at the Waukon State Bank Drive-In location until 1991, and Calvin also worked for Richard Lomen.
He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, where he served on the consistory board and cemetery memorial board. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, playing cards at the Senior Citizens Center, bus trips, fishing and spending time in the outdoors.
Survivors include his children, Lyle (Sharon) Henning of Ossian, Brenda (Dave) Deering of Postville, Bonnie (Gary) Sickels of Waukon, and Gerry (Janet) Henning of Wyanet, IL; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Dorothy) Henning of Ossian; three sisters, Lorraine (Harlan) Koenig of Postville, Gertrude Hagen of Waukon, and Betty (Virgil) Opfer of Waukon. He was preceded in death by his wife, June, who died in 2007; and three brothers, Reuben, Irvin and Lawrence Henning.
Honorary casketbearers are Katie Burrichter, Jessica and Jodi Deering, Dacia, Dannette, Deanna and Julie Henning, Jill May, and Karisa and Ivy Sickels. Casketbearers are Travis Henning, Aaron, Aarik and Aandi Deering, Kendal Sickels, Joe May and Todd Burrichter.
