Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, October 28 for Lawrence T. Mickelson of Waukon, Iowa who died Saturday, October 26, 1985 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa. He was 83 years old. The Rev. Lynn Groe conducted the 1:30 p.m. funeral services at St. John's Lutheran church of which the deceased was a member. burial was in the Oakland cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were John Bauercamper, Donn Smedsrud, Ben Kruger, Frank Hager, Marcus Smith, and Merlin Kruger.

Lawrence Mickelson was born October 7, 1902 in Belgrade, Minnesota, Nicollet County to Fred and Josephine(Anderson) Mickelson. He attended the high school there, received his B.A. degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and his M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota. He was a school teacher in Oaks, North Dakota and was a school superintendent in Ipswich, South Dakota and the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota. He was also the principal of education at two other reservations, Standing Rock in North Dakota, where he also operated the general store, and at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was also the pre-employment testing manager for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Dayton, Ohio. He worked for General Mills Company in the farm service division where he was in charge of price and priority.

Mickelson was active in the Kiwanis club, being a district officer many times. He was a Shriner and supported the Masonic burn center and spastic research. He was an avid horseman, keeping registered Morgan horses, and was an honorary chief "Cante Maaza" (meaning "Iron Heart") so named by the Hunkpapa Sioux at Standing Rock Indian Resevation.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Pieper. He and Lillian were married at Riverside, Illinois on July 19, 1933. Lillian was born in Allamakee County. Her parents were August and Anna (Bauercamper) Pieper. In addition, Lawrence is survived by his brother Norman Mickelson of Grand Rapids, Minnesota and 2 sisters, Ruth Mickelson of Belgrade, Minnesota and Mrs. Hilma Tolo of Moorhead, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Werner Mickelson and Harold Mickelson and 1 sister, Ruth.
