Relatives in this area have received word of the death of Emmett J. Laughlin at a hospital in Miami, Florida on August 16, 1985. His remains were taken to Fort Lauderdale for wake services, mass, and burial at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on August 19. Casket bearers were Carlos Castellon, Emmett Laughlin, Jr., James and Robert Laughlin, Ted and Christopher Castellon. Jennings Funeral Home of Fort Lauderdale was in charge of arrangements.

Emmett was born March 4, 1897 at his parent's home in French Creek Township, Allamakee County, the son of Andrew and Ella (Dougherty) Laughlin. He attended a local rural school, Campion High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, and Columbia High School in Dubuque, Iowa, where he graduated. He was an Army veteran of World War I. He worked in a Kresge store in Des Moines, Iowa and later was assistant manager, then manager of Kresge Stores in Louisville, Kentucky, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lewiston, Maine, Lowell and Brockton, Massachusetts.

After having a heart attack he retired from Kresge stores. He and his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. There he sold real estate for a development company, in addition to acquiring and caring for apartment rentals. After the death of his wife Lillian in 1971, he moved to one of his rental apartments where he remained until 1982 when an injury from a fall made it necessary to enter the Snapper Creek Nursing home where he remained until his death.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew Laughlin, Jr. and Harold Laughlin, and two sisters, Mary (Mrs. William) Walch, and Ella Francis Laughlin who died in infancy.

He is survived by a son Emmett J. Laughlin of Miami Lakes, Florida and 2 daughters, Barbara Brooks of Rockville, Maryland, and Dorothy Castellon of Miami, Florida; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Anna (Mrs. Leo) Welch and Gertrude Laughlin, both of Waukon, Iowa.
