Keymar, MD -A Detour man was killed and his son seriously injured Friday afternoon when their plane crashed in a soggy field near Keymar Airport.

Patrick David Williams Sr., 46, the pilot of the plane, was pronounced dead on scene by an offical from the Carroll County Medical Examiner's Office.

Patrick David Williams Jr., 20, was flown from the scene to the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services in Batimore by Maryland State Police Helicopter immediately after the 1:40 p.m. crash.

He was reportedly in very critical condition Friday night.

The plane, a single-engine, fixed winged Champion 7ECA built in 1985, dug a two-foot-deep hole in the field when the nose struck the ground, flipped onto it's top. and came to rest approximately 25 feet away from the point of
impact.

Witnesses told state police that the plane had just taken off from the airport and was flying southbound, parallel to Md. 194, when it made a
banking left turn, stalled, and nose dived into the field.

The plane's nose and left wing were crushed by the impact. There was no fire.

According to state police, the pilot was an experienced flyer, and may have worked on the plane himself.

State police said the two men may have been taking the plane up for a test-run.

The Civil Air Patrol has secured the scene of the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board officals are investigating.

The airport is private, is used by a few pilots in the area, and does not have a control tower or airport manager.
