Funeral services were held Monday January 4 for Gusta Marie Olander who died Wednesday, December 30, 1987 at the Good Samaritan Center at the age of 87. The Rev. Larry Olson officiated at the 1:30 p.m. services held at Martin Funeral Home. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery, Waukon, Iowa. Casket bearers were Robert J. Anderson, Willard Verthein, Gus Verthein, Melbourne Evanson, Millard Wild, Lester Thomson, Clifford Anderson and Edgar Ericson.

Gusta was born April 27, 1900 in Union City Township, Allamakee County, Iowa to John and Anna (Siegert) Verthein. She attended Wheatland Ridge School in Union City Township. On May 28, 1919 she married Oscar "Nap" Napolean Olander in Waukon, Iowa. He died in October 1978. She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church and UPW church groups.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two children Leora and infant son, Rodney John, and 9 brothers and sisters, Henry Verthein, Elsie Gruber, Emma Bulman, Alvina Wild, John Verthein, Martha Bulman, George Verthein, Gustave Verthein, and Clara Donahue.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Jean Berg of Joliet, Illinois, and Mrs. Robert (June) Pearce of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
