Arthur J. Bakewell, 91, of Lansing, died December 13, 1991 at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon.
The youngest child of William and Magdalene (Phillippi) Bakewell, he was born December 31, 1899 at Oak Hill, the family's farm near Lansing. Arthur was educated in rural and Lansing schools.
On June 23, 1923 he married Margaret L. "Peggy" O'Neill, of Wauzeka, WI, at St. Gabriel's Church in Prairie du Chien. They soon moved to Berkeley, CA, where Arthur was employed by Standard Oil of California. In 1928 they retumcd to Iowa to assist his parents in operating Oak Hill Fann.
Arthur retired from farming in 1975, moved to Lansing in 1976, and resided at his riverside home until entering Thomton Manor Nursing & Care Center in September 1990. Peggy Bakewell died on September 29, 1980.
Arthur was an avid reader and loved to travel. He made frequent trips to the southwestern U.S., toured the Pacific Northwest, New England, and Canada. At the age of 84 he toured Europe.
He is survived by two sons, Robert and wife Ruth, Tulsa, OK, and David, Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Margaret, and husband Robert J. Welch, rural Lansing; a daughter-in-law, Virginia (Ryan) Bakewell, Mesa, AZ; 16 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; a son, James; a brother, Mathias F.; and four sisters, Mary C. Brown, Helena T. Omlie, Adela F. Kolle, and Anita Albert.
The funeral service was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lansing, on December 16. Concelebrating the funeral Mass were Rev. William O'Neill, CPPS, of the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN; Rev. Herbert Tegeler, Lansing; Msgr. Edward Lechtenberg, Waukon; and Rev. Richard Kuhn, Ossian.
Pallbearers were Thomas Lentz, Protivin, Jeffrey Welch, Louisville, KY, Robert Bakewell, LaCrosse, James Welch, Waukon, James Bakewell, Ossian, and Daniel Scholtes, Lansing. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing.
Arrangements were made by Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home, Lansing.
