Helen H. Mohwinkle

Helen E. Mohwinkle, 92, of Waukon, died Monday, January 3, 2011, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 8 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church in rural New Albin with Pastor Paul Burgess officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, New Albin. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Helen Emalen Mohwinkle was born October 7, 1918 in Union City Township, rural Dorchester. She was the daughter of Earl and Myrtle (Sadler) Beardmore. Helen attended the English Bench School in rural Dorchester and graduated in the Normal Training Curriculum from Waukon High School in 1937. She taught at the Hanover Country School for a year. April 23, 1938 she married Delton August Mohwinkle at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Helen and Delton farmed together in the English Bench area for many years. Following Delton’s death in 1972, Helen continued to live on the farm until moving to Waukon in 1981.
Helen was a life-long active member of Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, where she served as elder, clerk of session, and treasurer of Presbyterian Women. She also served on a support and nominating committee of the John Knox Presbytery. She was a lifetime member of the Allamakee County Historical Society, a volunteer with the Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and a past president of Allamakee County Farm Bureau Women. Helen was a wonderful cook and baker and known for her homemade pies and bread. She was a volunteer grandparent at St. Patrick Catholic School in Waukon and an avid Chicago Cubs and Waukon Indian sports fan. Helen enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, crocheting and making doilies.
Survivors include her eight children, Lyle (Mary Ellen) Mohwinkle of Waukon, Ralph (Viv) Mohwinkle of Aplington, Gretta (David) Fiet of Rockford, IL, Greg (Cathy) Mohwinkle of New Albin, Brenda Vonderohe of Waukon, Doreen Denstad of Caledonia, MN, Fern (Allan) Rissman of Waukon and Beverly (Scott) Anderson of Marion; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jane (Leon) Schoh and Ruby (Nyles) Herman, both of Waukon, and Mae Gustin of Blair, NE; one sister-in-law, Rae Beardmore of Waukon, and two brothers-in-law, Dale (Mary) Mohwinkle of Marion and Milton Mohwinkle of Topeka, KS. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Delton; two grandchildren, Christine Vonderohe and Adam Rissman; a son-in-law, Roger Vonderohe; and a brother, Glenn Beardmore.

Honorary casketbearers are Jody Thies, Deborah McEvilly, Jennifer Hoffman, Janet Nissen, Sarah Elscott, Renee Engebritson, Angela Denstad-Stigeler, and Amber Rissman. Casketbearers are Steve, Jeff, Jason, and Jeremy Mohwinkle, Ron Fiet, Mark Vonderohe, Aaron Denstad, Nick Rissman, and Brett Anderson.
