Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Katherine Hawes, age 86, of Lansing, Iowa died Sunday, November 30, 1986 at Thornton Manor, Lansing, Iowa after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 3 at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Lansing, Iowa with the Rev. Herbert Tegler officiating with the Rev. John Smith of Wexford in attendance. Burial was in the Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, Iowa with Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were her grandsons David Hawes of Wexford, Jeff Hawes of Lansing, Iowa, Dick Hawes of Alma, Wisconsin, John Hawes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mike Corrigan of Oelwein, Iowa and Kevin Sutter of Clear Lake, Iowa. Honorary pallbearers were Gretta Scholtes, Mary Steffen, Mildred Kelleher, Kathleen Guider, Elsie Teff, all of Lansing, Iowa and Alice McGovern of Wexford.
Offertory gifts were presented by three granddaughters Carol Peterson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lea Ann Peters of LaCrescent, Minnesota and Debra Hawes of Wexford. Prayers of the Faithful were offered by granddaughters Jerre Corrigan of Oelwein, Iowa with farewell tribute being read by daughter-in-law Isabelle Hawes of Wexford. Katherine's nephew Michael Madden of Wexford was the lector. Altar boys were Gared Winters, Chris Troendle, and John Scholtes. The Immaculate Conception Adult Choir provided music for the mass.
Katherine was born October 23, 1900 in rural Wexford, in Allamakee County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ellen (Thornton) Manton. She attended rural area schools and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in the rural schools. On June 6, 1922 she married Leo Hawes of rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa. She farmed with her husband for 40 years before moving to Lansing, Iowa in 1954. She was employed by St. George High School for several years before retiring. She was a member of A.C.C.W, Homemaker Club, American Auxiliary, Senior Citizens and Immaculate Conception Church, and Aquinas Study Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son Robert Hawes, four brothers, and two sisters.
She is survived by 2 sons, Leo "Bud" Hawes of rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa and John "Bill" Hawes of Apache Junction, Arizona; 5 daughters, Delores Hawes of Lansing, Iowa, Alice Wood of San Diego, California, Pat Darling of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Ramona Mullarkey of rural Wexford and Eleanor Corrigan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 25 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sister Mary Ramona Manton of Denver, Colorado.
