Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Leo Hawes, age 88, of Lansing, Iowa, died Thursday morning on January 2, 1986 at Thornton Manor, Lansing, Iowa where he had resided this past year. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 4 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Lansing with the Rev. Herbert Tegler officiating. Other celebrants were the Rev. Robert Rahe of New Albin, Iowa, the Rev. John Smith of Wexford, and the Rev. Cletus Hawes of Bellevue, Iowa. Lector was Leo's nephew Michael Madden of Wexford.
Offertory gifts were carried by three granddaughters, Carol Peterson and Mary Kay Geers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Jane Darling of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Prayers of the faithful were offered by granddaughter Linda Roney of Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a final tribute prayer being read by daughter-in-law Isabelle Hawes of Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Music and hymns were provided by the Immaculate Conception adult choir. Altar boys were Kevin Conway, Rick Welch, and David Dunlevy.
Burial service was held at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing, Iowa with Burke-Thornberg Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were six grandsons: Kevin Sutter of Clear Lake, Iowa, Mike Corrigan of Oelwein, Iowa, Dick Hawes of Alma, Wisconsin, Scott, David, and Steve Hawes of Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Honorary pallbearers were John Scholtes, Leonard Kelleher, Bob Sandry, Clem Riek and Bob Teff, all of Lansing and Irvin Meyer of New Albin, Iowa.
Leo was born November 2, 1897 in rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa, the son of John and Catherine (Rafter) Hawes. He attended rural area schools. On June 6, 1922 he married Katherine Manton of Wexford, Allamakee County, Iowa. He farmed for over 40 years before moving to Lansing, Iowa in 1954. He was employed by Brennan Construction and Immaculate Conception Church for several years before retiring. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Knights of Columbus and Senior Citizens.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Hawes, two sisters, Marie Cota of Harpers Ferry, Iowa and Katherine Whalen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a brother Charles Hawes who died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine; 2 sons, Leo "Bud" Hawes of rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa and William Hawes of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 5 daughters, Delores Hawes of Lansing, Iowa, Mrs. Raymond (Alice) Wood of San Diego, California, Mrs. Charles (Eleanor) Corrigan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mrs. Jack (Pat) Darling of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; 25 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Clem Hawes of Harpers Ferry, Iowa and Len Hawes of Hastings, Nebraska; nieces and nephews.
