Funeral services for Mary Herman, age 90, of Waukon, Iowa were held Monday, December 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, rural Waukon, Iowa. Rev. James Jacobson officiated. Burial was in the Zalmona Cemetery. Martin Funeral Service, Waukon, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Brad Herman, Brian Herman, Brent Herman, Eugene Herman, Don Stewart, and Ron Winters.

Mary Herman, daughter of Frederick Grotegut and Wilhelmina (Stock) Grotegut was born December 9, 1898 in Winneshiek County, Iowa. She died December 9, 1988 at the Good Samaritan Center, Waukon, Iowa. *Those dates are what was listed. She died on her birthday.* She was confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ on April 5, 1914. She received her education in rural Frankville schools. On October 17, 1918 she married Elmer R. Herman at the family farm in Winneshiek County, Iowa. They farmed in Union Prairie Township until 1961 and then moved to Waukon. Mary had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Home since July 1983. She was a member of the Zalmona Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Sarah Circle of the Zalmona UPW.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Elmer, on March 7, 1983; brothers John, Simon, Albert, and Edwin Grotegut; sisters, Mabel, Martha, and Lydia.

Surviving are her children, Ruben Herman of Eitzen, Minnesota, Mrs. Hanley (Marian) Jenkins of Des Moines, Iowa; Nyles Herman of Waukon, Iowa, Mrs. Jan (Vernell) Esch of Strawberry Point, Iowa; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emma Henning of Waukon, Iowa.
