Funeral services were held Thursday, June 29, 1989 for Jeffrey Dean Houg, age 18, who died Sunday, June 25, 1989 when he was struck by lightning near Harpers Ferry, Iowa on the Mississippi River. The Rev. Lynn Groe conducted the 11 a.m. services at St.John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, Iowa. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Kevin Haas, Mike Scheffert, Eric Kiesau, Ron Welper, Jerry Keenan, Tim Schaller, Dave Shogren, Tom Williams, Matt Goltz, and Craig Nagel. Honorary pallbearers were the Waukon High School Baseball Team.

Jeff was born August 23, 1970 in Waukon, Iowa to Gary and Marlene (Scheffert) Houg. He was a 1989 graduate of Waukon Senior High School where he was in the top 15% of the class. He planned to attend Luther College, Decorah, Iowa in the fall. He was involved in the following activities during school: President of the 1989 Senior Class, captain of the 1988-89 football team, four year member of the baseball team of which he was currently captain and was all-conference his junior year, National Honor Society member, former member of the basketball and track teams, and had received the Tom Anderson Award as a freshman. He liked all sports and liked to travel. He helped coach and officiate Little League in Waukon during the summer. He was a member of St.John's Church where he was baptized and confirmed.

Surviving are his parents, a sister, Lori Farley of Cedar Falls, Iowa, two brothers Wade of St.Louis Park, Minnesota and Scott Houg of Waukon, Iowa, and paternal grandparents Carl and Mardella Houg of Monona, Iowa.
