Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Zonona E. Wheat died Wednesday November 2, 1988 at Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 83. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 5 at Zion United Church of Christ. The Rev. Henry Heinbuch conducted the services. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Tim Regan, Tom and Rick Wheat, Dick Prestemon, Lynn Morrow, and Clete Althoff.
Zonona was born March 26, 1905 in Deep River, Iowa to Preston and Florence (Smith) Sargood. She attended Iowa City High School and the University of Iowa. On November 28, 1923 she married Dr. Roy Wheat in Iowa City, Iowa. She had lived in Deep River, Iowa City, Marquette, Iowa. Since 1926 she was a resident of Waukon, Iowa. She was a homemaker and a dental assistant for her husband. She was a member of Zion UCC and Women's Fellowship, a past department president of American Legion Auxiliary of Iowa and various local, state, and district offices of the American Legion Auxiliary, counselor at Girl's State for 25 years, board of directors of Camp Sunnyside, lifetime member of Order of Eastern Star, and 19th Century Study Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died September 26, 1974; an infant son, Robert and a brother Gilbert Sargood.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Jacquelyn) Regan of Waukon, Iowa, a son Harry of Maricopa, Arizona; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Marvin (Louise) Perkins of Iowa City, Iowa.
