Milton Fred Duvel

Milton F. Duvel, 86, of Waukon, died Mon. June 4, 2001, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Thurs., June 7, at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon with the Rev. Donald Berg officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was held in Salem Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Milton Fred Duvel was born Jan. 21, 1915, on the rural Waukon farm of his parents, Fred and Lena (Klepper) Duvel. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ and attended Ludlow #4 Rural School and Waukon High School. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1935-1939 and spent time in China and Shanghai. On June 10, 1941, he married Bernice Sanderson at the Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church parsonage in Waterville. He again served as a corporal with the U.S. Marines from 1943-1945 and saw active duty in the South Pacific at Okinawa and Ryukyu Islands.

Following his service, Milton returned to Ludlow Township, where he farmed for many years until his retirement in 1976. During this time he also operated Milt's Gun Shop out of his home. Milton moved to Waukon in 2000 and has been a resident of Northgate Care Center most of that time.

Milton was a life-long member of Salem United Church of Christ, where he formerly served on the Consistory. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, and NRA. Milton enjoyed being outdoors and liked to fish and boat. He did a lot of wood cutting and splitting for himself and other people. He was also a marksman and gun enthusiast, competing in many area shooting events.

Milton is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice, of Waukon; two daughters, Sandy (Paul) McConaughy of Cedar Rapids and Linda Peterson of Waukon; a son, Virgil (Becky) Duvel of Toddville; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Viola Winkie, of Waukon.

Honorary casket bearers were Larry Snitker, Leo Klock, Jim Opfer, and Joe Bakke. Casket bearers were Duane, Wayne, and Orville Duvel, Earl Haas, Milo Kloke, and Dennis Winkie.
