Joseph Gavin

Joseph Gavin of Waukon, age 82, passed away Friday, December 17, 2010. Funeral services were held Monday, December 20 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Father Joseph Schneider and Monsignor Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Hanover. Hanson Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.

Joe was born March 7, 1928 in Hanover Township, the son of Francis and Helen (Steinhart) Gavin. He graduated from St. Patrick High School in Waukon in 1947. Joe worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 35 years. He was a long-time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon.
October 27, 1952, Joe was united in marriage to Mary Schulte Tierney. She brought to the union five children who he loved unconditionally. Their marriage was later blessed with a daughter and a son. Joe was known for and truly enjoyed helping others. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and neighbor.

Joe is survived by Mary, his wife of 58 years; children Tess Pladsen, Muggs (Francis) Berns, Tom (Coni) Tierney, Sue Bennett, and Larry (Chris) Gavin, all of Waukon, and Pat (Cindy) Tierney and Kate (Jeff) Tooke of La Crosse, WI. Joe is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Helen Gavin; one brother, William; three sisters, Catherine Gavin, Dorothy (Tom) Collins and Julie (Hubie) Hermanson; a son-in-law, Arlyn Pladsen; a grandson, Jeff Berns; and a great-granddaughter, Charlie Belle Elmer.
Casketbearers were Joe’s grandchildren, Jerry and Reggie Berns, Shea Gavin, Austin Bennett, Greg Tierney, Adam Tooke, Vicki Hein and Colleen Tierney. Honorary casketbearers were his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, or the Shriners.
