Helen G. Anderson, 95, of Waukon died Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Ron Roberts officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, November 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Helen McCabe Anderson was born February 5, 1915 to John and Cora (Teeple) McCabe. She graduated from Waukon High School in 1932. She attended college at Upper Iowa University to acquire her teaching certificate. She taught country school at Ludlow #6 and Jefferson #3, which was located on the McCabe property. Her younger sister, Mabel, had Helen for her eighth grade teacher.
Helen was very proud of the fact that she gave her parents the money she earned from teaching school to help make the payments to save the family farm during The Great Depression. Later, she attended the University of Iowa for a year and then went to Community College in Des Moines to get her stenography certificate. Helen was employed by the Civil Service Commission, which took her to Tokyo, Japan, where she took depositions during the war trials. She also worked in Anchorage, AK and Honolulu, HI.
She found her way to California, where she met and married Palmer Anderson June 6, 1953. To this union one child was born, Joanne. They made their home in Monterey Park, CA, where Helen continued her career as a stenographer and worked for Los Angeles County for many years. Helen was a true pioneer for women regarding travel and career. Helen will always be remembered for her self-sacrificing love for her family, her gentle nature and beautiful smile.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Joanne; and her “favorite” son-in-law, David Schneider of Postville; five grandchildren, Marcy (Larry) Hoffman, her “favorite” grandson, Darren (Marcy) Schneider, Kristen (John) Kelly, Annie (Sam) Sadler and Kim (Wes) Moore; 16 great-grandchildren, Ellie, Nolan and Ethan Hoffman, Sydney, Laynee and Allie Schneider, Katie, Klara and Kora Kelly, Gabe, Jenna and Jule Sadler, and Jonah, Zaida, Elijah and Lila Moore; a sister, Mabel Batteen; and nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cora; her husband, Palmer; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Alice.
Casket bearers are Marcy and Larry Hoffman, Darren and Marcy Schneider, Kristen and John Kelly, Annie and Sam Sadler, and Kim and Wes Moore.Waukon Standard, November 3, 2010
