Contributor: Connie L. Ellis (Relative - Kelly researcher)Friends of Miss Nettie Kelly were grieved to learn of her death Thursday, (1938, DAY AND MONTH UNKNOWN)at her home east of Rossville. Her demise was due to the informities of age, following a several months illness. The deceased was born in Harrison County at Cadiz, Ohio, on November 29, 1860, along with her twin sister, Alice Moore Kelly. They were the daughters of William Morton Kelly and Sarah Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. William Kelly,and the twin girls, came to this county in 1861, settling at Rossville, Iowa. With the exception of a short time at Mason City,Iowa, Nettie spent her entire life in the Rossville area.
She and her brother, Daniel, established their home on a farm in Paint Creek township and reared two boys, Gilbert Eadie, 11, and his brother, Walter, 9, to manhood. The latter died a year ago.The boys came to Iowa on the Orphan train from New York. Gilbert and his wife, who was Miss Gladys Sunderman, have assumed charge of the Kelly farm relieving the aged brother and sister of that responsibility in their declining years.
Nettie was preceded in death by her parents, sister Emily/Eliza Jane Kelly who was born May 24, 1859 in Carroll County, Ohio and died September 21, 1862 in Allamakee County. Her brother Benner Kelly who was born August 19, 1864 on the farm and died July 27, 1865 on the farm near Rossville. Another brother Moore Kelly was born August 20, 1866 and died May 22, 1868. Her brother Fred Kelly was killed in a car-train accident in Nebraska in 1928. Her twin sister, Alice Moore (Kelly) Campbell who died on February 4, 1933 at the Daniel and Nettie Kelly farm.Her brother William Harvey Kelly died in 1936. Her sister, Mary Ettia (Kelly) Campbell died February 24, 1938 at Sheridan, Wyoming.
She is survived by her brothers Dan Kelly and Jess Kelly of near Rossville, and a sister Martha Marie/Mattie Gast who is married to Albert H. Gast of Nora Springs, Iowa, besides a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing.
She became a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church at an early age and was a devoted and faithful member as long as her health and strength permitted. Funeral services were held in the edifice Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Butler of Frankville. Special music was rendered by Miss Vivian Waters. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery along with her parents and siblings. The casket bearers were Robert McGeough, Owen Kavanaugh, Robert McNally, Orrie Gast, Ray Leas, and James Barlow. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, testifying to the high regard in which she was held. The flower girls were Marguerite Pettit, Marguerite McMillan, Valaria Canoe, and Alfa Pederson.
