Laguna Hills, Calif. - don Cahalan, 80, Laguna Hills, died Tuesday, Oct 20, in Laguna Hills. Born in Allamakee County, Iowa, he was married in 1933 to Ellen Johnson, who survives.

Mr. Cahalan was a pioneering researcher in the public health aspects of alcoholism. He also had been a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, retiring in 1979.

Also surviving are one son, Mike, Laguna Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Carol Cooper, New Haven, Conn.; and a brother, Dr. Leo Cahalan, Logansport.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. sunda in the Men's faculty Club on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley.
