Miriam R. Martin, 91, of Waukon, died Sun., July 29, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Wed., Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with the Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Miriam Ruth Opfer Martin was born Jan. 11, 1910, in Waukon. Her parents were John Carl and Emma Elizabeth (Hager) Opfer. Miriam was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ. She attended Waukon elementary schools, Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College, then graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in 1932. She taught school in Slater and Chicago Heights, IL, each for two years.
On Jan. 25, 1938, Miriam married Howard F. Martin at her parents' home in Waukon. Miriam was an active member of Zion UCC, serving in the Women's Fellowship and Missionary Circle, and singing in the choir. She was also a member of the Thursday Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, P.E.O., and Eastern Star.
Miriam enjoyed spending holidays and special times with relatives as well as getting together with her friends. She raised flowers, sewed, and liked to entertain at her home. Miriam also enjoyed spending time with Howard at their river cabin and traveling to many parts of the world.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; two brothers, Oliver and Lloyd Opfer; and a sister, Althea Harrison.
Survivors include two nieces, Janet (Robert) Dravis of East Moline, IL, and Irene (Dr. Norman) Fiet of Bend, OR; a grandniece, Susan Dravis of Muscatine; and a grandnephew, Kevin Fiet of Portland, OR.
Honorary casket bearers were Lynn Morrow and Rupert Caballero.
Casket bearers were Wilbur Rose, John Meierkord, Susan Dravis, and Valerie, Greta, and Roger Martin.
