HOLLY, Alice Berdeva (Owen)
Alice Berdeva (Owen) Holly was born June 4, 1905 in Frankville, Iowa to parents Eugene E. and Melissa (Webb) Owen. She was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Frankville. Alice graduated from the Postville High School and obtained her teaching degree at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She also earned additional teaching credits at Upper Iowa College in Fayette, Iowa.
On September 1, 1925 Alice was united in marriage to Elmer Franck at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. Elmer died November 2, 1928. Faced with raising two very young children, she worked as a practical nurse and housekeeper for various families, sometimes having to leave her children in the care of both sets of grandparents. On January 28, 1933 she married Henry Timmerman but they divorced in 1936. She married Vencilof Holly in Chicago, Illinois on August 24, 1946. Vince died February 17, 1974. Alice and Vince lived in Monona for many years and later in Postville. She taught in the rural schools in Clayton and Allamakee Counties for over 35 years. She also taught at the parochial school in Festina, Iowa until retiring in 1970.
Alice died Monday February 16, 1987 at the Postville Community Hospital following a long illness. She reached the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 12 days. She was a loving and caring person who was a dedicated teacher to all of her students.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, Elmer Franck and Vencilof Holly; one son, Eugene Timmerman, who died June 23, 1971 and one sister, Mildred L. Owen. Surviving is one daughter, Evelyn and husband Forest"Toey" Kelly of Postville; one son, Milton Franck and wife Wilma of Hazlet, New Jersey; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother Harley Owen and wife May of Eureka, Illinois; and two nieces, Kay Williams of Peoria, Illinois, and Ina Mae Minecke of Prospect Heights, Illinois.
Funeral services were held on February 19, 1987 at 11:00 a.m. at the Garden City United Methodist Church, Monona, Iowa with Rev. Terrance Hennesy officiating. Music was provided by organist Mrs Betty Schultz, and quartet of Jackson Turner, Steve Hass, Harlan Hass, and David Schlitter. Pallbearers were Dale Ellis, Michael Ellis, Randy Franck, Harry Wilson, Veryl Kelley, and Donald Franck. She was buried in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, Iowa.
