Death of E. J. Sadler

Edward J. Sadler was born on March 4th, 1874, on the English Bench in Union City township and departed this life in the same locality on July 10th, 1937, being 63 years, 3 months and 6 days of age.

The deceased was the youngest son of William and Mary Sadler. He succeeded his father (who died in 1891) on the home farm and continued to operate it until 1925, when he removed to Preston, Minn., where he resided for 10 years. In 1935 he returned to Allamakee county and the old home locality where he had lived so long. E. J., as he was familiarly known, possessed the knack of making friends and keeping them. He was popular and active in the support of all movements to promote progress and advancement in the community.

On February 13, 1895, he was married to Miss Rose Wild at the French Creek M. E. Church. To this union six children were born: Clyde E. of Waukon, Iowa; Myrtle F. (Mrs. Earl S. Beardmore), Union City township; Helga Mae (Mrs. Alton J. Bulman), Union City township; Arthur W. of Rochester, Minn.; Forrest J. of Rice Lake, Wis.; Alton B. dying in infancy.

They were also the foster parents of Elmer W. Bailey, now of Boulder, Colorado, and Lucille Snow (Mrs. Clarence Yoder), at present at the home and who faithfully helped in the care of the deceased. Two nieces also shared in the home. By way of tribute: “In as much as ye have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” These children, together with their mother and one brother, William M. of English Bench, and one sister, Mrs. J. E. Martin of Sparta, Wisconsin, fourteen grandchildren and many relatives and friends survive to hold him dear in their memory.

He united with the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church over 40 years ago and was a member in good standing at the time of his death and had the office of trustee for several years. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Funeral services were held at the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Alfred C. Crouch officiating, at 2:30 P. M. Tuesday, July 13th. Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery adjoining the church.
