Milton "Mit" Wild, 84, of Lansing died Monday Sept. 6, 1999, at Thornton Manor Care Center in Lansing, following a brief illness.
Milton George Wild was born on Sept. 12, 1914, on the French Creek Township, rural Lansing farm of his parents, George and Anna (Fink) Wild. He attended rural French Creek area schools. Mit started working for Calhoun Creamery in 1928, and was a buttermaker. On August 8, 1938, he married Genevieve Guider at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dubuque.
In 1945, Mit and Genevieve bought the Star Dairy in Lansing, which they ran until 1971. They made their own "Star Dairy Ice Cream". From 1967 until 1989, they owned the Riv Aire Restaurant in Lansing. He also operated a beverage distributing business for many years.
Mit was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church and its Holy Name Society. He was also a former mayor and city council member in Lansing, as well as a member of the Lansing Volunteer Fire Department, Kiwanis, Ducks Unlimited and served as president of the Lansing Marina Association. He was also president of the Northeast Iowa Buttermakers Association and was a national butter judge for the midwest.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling, and was a champion skeet shooter, and was a pilot and member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include his wife Genevieve, of Lansing; two daughters, Patti Wild (Joe Strobel) of Lansing, and Connie (Bob) Gallagher of Waukon; four grandchildren, Shawn and Craig Gallagher, Michelle Bakke and Lisa Guider; nine great grandchildren; four sisters; Orabelle Wild, Eleanor Mouw and Arlene Rooney, all of Waukon and Sylvia Hayes of Sun City, Ariz.; two step-sisters, Esther Humphrey of Alexandria, Fla. and Sylvia (Charles) Bakke of Waukon; and one half sister, Shirley (Wilbur) Rose of Waukon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-brothers Herbert and Walter Zimmerman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, with Father Herbert Tegeler officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing.
Casket bearers were James Brazell, Tom Thomson, Bill Campbell, Robert Campbell, Bert Bigelow and Joe Betthauser.
