Bernice Josephine Thomas, 89, Postville, Iowa, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa, following a brief illness. Bernice was born on November 8, 1920, Clermont, Iowa, to Gilbert and Magda (Larson) Hanson. She graduated from Clermont High School, Clermont, Iowa, with the class of 1938. Bernice later graduated from Pitzie Beauty College, Waterloo, Iowa, in 1954. She practiced cosmetology for over fifty years.
Bernice was united in marriage to Milo Meyer in 1939. One daughter, Carol, was born to this union. Bernice was united in marriage to Charles "Sonny" Thomas on November 16, 1964, in Lawndale, CA. Bernice enjoyed dancing, roller-skating, crocheting, baking pies and lefse and flower gardening. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and St. Paul Ladies Aid. She was also a life-long member of VFW. She loved spending time with her family and friends and will be deeply missed by the many people who knew her.
Survivors include her husband, Charles "Sonny" Thomas, Postville; her daughter, Carol (Charles) Deering, Postville; four grandchildren, Charles F. (Kim) Deering, Postville, Lori Deering, Postville, Stacy (Phillip) Tharp, Clive, Lisa (Shannon) Schultz, Teutopolis, IL and twelve great-grandchildren.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Craig Deering, in 1991 and Michael Deering, in 1983; two sisters, Mildred Brandt and Doris Malecki; a brother, Dale Hanson and a brother, Louis Hanson, in infancy.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Steve Brackett will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Postville Cemetery, Postville, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, from 5-7 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
