Meta Ness

Meta Ness, 87, of Waukon, died Sat., Nov. 18, 2000 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waukon, with Rev. Ken Kimball officiating.

Private family graveside services were held at Old West Paint Creek Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon handled the arrangements.

Honorary casket bearers were her granddaughters and casket bearers were her grandsons.

Meta Leona Schmieden Ness was born May 13, 1913 on the rural Waterville farm of her parents, Herman and Lizzie (Dee) Schmieden. She was baptized and confirmed at East Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church, attended Dalby Country School, and graduated from Waterville High School in 1931.

Meta married Lester Ness on Sept. 5, 1933 in Minneapolis. Meta and Lester farmed in the rural Waterville area. She was a member of Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, where she served as a former president and treasurer of the Ladies Aid. She also taught Sunday School and served as janitor for several years.

Meta enjoyed gardening, crocheting, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made quilts for her family and the church. She was an excellent seamstress and an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.

Surviving Meta are two daughters, Leona (Victor) Diereksen of Marion and Helen Wesselmann of Decorah; two sons, Howard Ness of Decorah and Sigurd (Barb) Ness of Waterville; 11 grandchildren: Chris, Paul, Scott, Chad and Brent Ness; Bill and Leann Diereksen, Jamie TeKippe, Cindy Fretheim, Laurie Parker and Becky West and 19 great-grandchildren: Heather Herbsleb, J.R. and Hannah TeKippe, Allison and Krista Fretheim, Adam, Hannah, Caitlin, Danny, Dylan, Dakota, Colin, Evan, Leslie and Carter Ness; Bryce and Drew West and Emilie and Amanda Parker.

Meta Leona Ness was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester, a son-in-law, Loren Wesselmann, a daughter-in-law, Carol Ness, three sisters, Edna Prestmon, Luella Knudtson and Alice Sandry, and two brothers, Clarence and Victor Schmieden.
