MISSISSIPPI CLAIMS LIFE OF DAN BAXTER, 16
Daniel W. Baxter, 16, of rural New Albin drowned on Monday, April 18, in Big Slough, just across the Black Hawk Bridge.
He apparently fell from the bridge which spans that slough while in the company of several Kee High School friends.
The accident happened about 3:45 p.m., and attempts were made by his friends to save him, but to no avail. His body was recovered by the Lansing Fire Department, which searched the slough for more than one hour.
He was born on May 23, 1960 at Waukon, Iowa, the son of William and Hazel Rodenkirk Baxter. He was a junior at Kee High School in Lansing.
He is survived by his parents, five brothers, Joe, Paul, Frank, Charlie and Patrick, all at home; five sisters, Loretta of LaCrosse, Wis., and Ellen, Julie, Margaret and Donna, all at home.
Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Leona Baxter, of Waukon, and his maternal grandfather, William Rodenkirk of Decorah.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, the Rev. Linus Rasing officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The Burke-Thornburg Funeral Home of Lansing was in charge of arrangements.
