The death of Mrs. Martha L. Hanke, 72, of Waukon occurred on Wednesday, August 25, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette. She had been a resident there for about a week. She had been ill for several months. Funeral services were held from Salem United Church of Christ on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Jean-Paul Zenke officiating and interment was in the church cemetery.
She was born on February 16, 1901, in Allamakee County to Fred and Sophia Stock Kugel. She was married on June 20, 1922 in Ludlow township to Paul Hanke who died in February of 1971. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Calvin (June) Henning, Postville, and Mrs. Duane (Shirley) Duvel, Waukon; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Carl and Fred Kugel, both of Waukon, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Kruger, Cedar Rapids.
She was a graduate of Waukon High School and attended Upper Iowa University, and was a teacher in the Allamakee county rural schools and the Waukon elementary schools for 35 years.
Martin Bros. Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
