The death of Patrick J. Mahoney, one of Waukon's most active and eldest residents, occurred Thursday evening at Veteran's Memorial Hospital. Mr. Mahoney had been in failing health for several months and had more recently been a resident at the Good Samaritan Home. A Requiem Mass was said Monday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Curch with interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
Mr. Mahoney was born in French Creek township on March 12, 1874, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Mahoney. He attended the local schools and in Nebraska and also Eels Business School, Waukon. Being of an adventurous nature, Mr. Mahoney took a trip through the "wild west" in 1892 and
in 1900, in company with a friend, he went to Hawaii where he worked for a time on a sugar plantation on the island of Milo (sic){probably Hilo}; later going to Manila, Philippines, where on July 4, 1900, he saw the late President Taft get sworn in as the first civil governor of the Philippine Islands. He spent three years in the Philippines as foreman of the city corral, a position comparable to that of a city engineer, overseeing a crew of 80 .
In 1903, he returned to Waukon and spent a year as clerk at the Grand Hotel. In 1904, he started tending bar, purchasing his own business in 1912 (Mahoney's Tavern), he which he was active in until about 1964. For 22 years during Prohibition he served only root beer and apple cider.
On October 10, 1905, Mr. Mahoney was united in marriage with Rose McCormick at Lycurgus. She passed away in 1963.
Mr.Mahoney was always active in community circles. He was a member of the city council for 16 years; 43 years, a member of the local fire company. 12 years in which he was treasurer; a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, two terms he served as Grand Knight; was a long time member of the Elks Lodge; treasurer of Mt. Olivet cemetery; received a citation from Basil Connor, national chairman for the March of Dimes, for long time service in March of Dimes; was active in the New Mellary Abbey Retreat Association and undoubtedly some enterprises we have failed to mention.
Survivors are two sons, Joseph Mahoney, Chicago, Ill., and Edward Mahoney, Waukon. A daughter Marie, Mrs. George Taylor passed away a few years ago, as did a son Earl, and there was an infant son, John, deceased. There are six grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
