Daniel Fist Johnson, 66, of West Des Moines passed away peacefully Friday, May 7, 2010 surrounded by family and friends at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A memorial service will be Wednesday, May 12 at 3 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home in West Des Moines with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Dan will be buried beside his father in Wexford at a later date. There will be a celebration of his life at the Denny Arthur residence, 2400 86th Street in West Des Moines, following the service.
Dan was born July 21, 1943 to Jules and Emily Johnson in St. Louis, MO. The family moved to Des Moines, where Dan attended Christ the King Elementary. He attended high school in Fremont, NE, where he played basketball and graduated from Bergen High School.
He moved back to West Des Moines, where he lived most of his life, with the exception of his summers being spent at the family’s summer cabin on the Mississippi River in Lansing for the last 40 years. Dan was employed at Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel, Clark Oil, and Resthaven Cemetery.
He enjoyed life and spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed his weekend card games, watching wrestling and golf, bargain hunting and fishing. Dan was a great friend and was willing to lend a hand or a dollar to anyone that was in need.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Jules; and best friend and brother, Jeff. Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Emily Johnson; daughter, Julie Johnson (Dennis Prine); sister, Denise (Don) Hunt; nephew, Jesse (Tina) Hunt; nieces, Heather Johnson and Andrea Johnson; as well as many, many friends.
