Herbert E. Easley, 89, of Harpers Ferry, died Friday, February 7, 2003, at his daughter's home in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 9 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Rev. Richard N. Eick officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements.
Herbert Eugene Easley was born February 6, 1914, in Houston, Mo., the son of Martin and Sarah (Brandon) Easley. At the age of five, he moved with his family to northeast Iowa and they settled in the Harpers Ferry area, where he has lived ever since. He graduated from Harpers Ferry High School in 1932 where he played basketball and baseball. After high school, he worked on the crew building Lock and Dam #9 on the Mississippi River. On September 11, 1936, Herb married Norma Adam in Waukon. He worked most of his life as a commercial fisherman in Harpers Ferry, but he also was the assistant mail carrier in Harpers Ferry and did a lot of painting around the area. Herb has been a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon since 1940. He served as president of the Harpers Ferry School Board for several years, and following consolidation, was a member of the Allamakee Community School District Board. He liked living in Harpers Ferry and being on the Mississippi River. For several years, he operated the movie house in the Town Hall. He and Norma both enjoyed music and dancing and dedicated a lot of time to the special needs of their daughter, Virginia. Herb was known for his good sense of humor and his love of children. Survivors include two daughters, Sandy (Pug) Stuefen of Cedar Rapids and Elaine (Wayne) Martin of Waukon; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Donald (Laurayne) Easley and Elton "Babe" Easley, both of Harpers Ferry. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Norma; his daughter Virginia; a brother, Bill Easley; and a sister, Inez Retz. Casketbearers were Russ Martin, Julie (Martin) Penkalski, Dean Penkalski, and Marty, Monty, and Mickey Stuefen.
