Kathryn M. Kirkeby

Kathryn M. Kirkeby, 75, of Waukon died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Aage Haugen Home, Decorah. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with burial at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, both in Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hanson Funeral Home, Waukon, where there will be a Scripture service at 4 p.m.

Kate focused the majority of her working life on helping other people. She worked at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon for many years. Her caring and compassionate nature made a difference in so many lives, from babies to adults.

Later, Kate enjoyed working at the S&D Café and became a well-known staple among the morning coffee crowd. She welcomed her customers with a warm smile and a quick wit and loved to have fun with those around her. Anyone who met her, always remembered her.

In her spare time, Kate loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She liked to spend a little of her tip money at the casino boat on occasion and found great happiness in simple pleasures. By nature, Kate was a happy person and always tried to find the positive side of life, no matter how challenging.

Kate retired from the S&D Café in 2003 to spend more time with her husband, Everett, after he was diagnosed with cancer. They enjoyed taking rides with their dog, Buddy and visiting family and friends. Kate cared for Everett up until his death in August of 2003. Kate later moved to Decrorah.
